Johnson Lowe Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of its fall group exhibition, The Second Body on view from September 30 to December 19.
Across cultures and centuries, containers have been given mouths, necks, shoulders, bellies, and feet, their anatomy revealing an enduring impulse to imagine objects as bodies capable of carrying more than material contents. Within the vessel, utility and belief occupy the same interior, and matter acquires a presence that extends beyond use. The Second Body casts this structure into a speculative register, where object, image, and body serve as host forms for another presence.
Swollen silhouettes, skeletal enclosures, encrusted skins, suspended masses, and figures staged as avatars compose a restless assembly. Throughout the exhibition, objects appear to exceed the limits of their making, as though experience has settled into them and continues to circulate there. Accumulation gives memory, projection, ritual, and time a material charge. The second gathers within the first: a parallel anatomy, an afterimage with weight, a life borne by matter. Every form carries the signal of its own double.
