    iN MY OWN WORDS "DIVIDED"

Johnson Lowe Gallery is pleased to present our newest iteration of our online viewing room series, "In My Own Words" dedicated to providing a glimpse into the creative minds of Johnson Lowe's represented artists.

Our second presentation of this series features new works of Steven Seinberg. In his latest series, Seinberg delves into the familiar territory of the division of space in his canvases, a recurring motif throughout his three-decade-long career. Through this exploration, he contemplates the dualistic nature inherent in existence — the interplay between light and darkness, known and unknown, seen and unseen. Seinberg's fascination with this division extends beyond mere physical boundaries, evolving into a profound examination of the metaphysical realms it represents. As he navigates these conceptual territories, he uncovers a myriad of possibilities, each offering unique insights into the nature of reality and human consciousness.

  • “These recent paintings, continue forward from my past work, yet they explore new concepts that have been swirling within my consciousness over the last several years. They may serve as vessels conveying the essence of growth while also hinting at the limitations that bind it. Are they manifestations of a biological metamorphosis, or rather, do they weave together multiple layers of reality into a singular, cohesive tapestry?

The division of space—an element that has been reoccurring in my paintings for different reasons throughout the years. Why do I return to it time and time again? It may be that it symbolizes the duality inherent in existence—the juxtaposition of the seen and the unseen, the known and the unknown? And in these divisions, what is revealed about the intricate web of cause and effect that governs our universe?”

  • "Now, in this latest series, the interplay between darkness and light opens up a myriad of questions and new problems to solve. Could it be that they represent alternate realms, existing either outside of time or within the same temporal frame but with divergent outcomes? As I observe the transitions within my paintings, I’m not yet sure... does the darker realm signify an end, or rather, a genesis—a rebirth into new possibilities?

And what of these alternate events, unfolding either in parallel dimensions or within the confines of a singular space? Are they intricately linked, connected, threads woven into the fabric of existence, or do they stand as independent narratives, intersecting only momentarily in the expanse of time and space?"

    About Steven Seinberg

Steven Seinberg was born in Brooklyn, New York and attended college in Atlanta, Georgia. Inspired by pioneering Abstract Expressionists such as Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly and Clyfford Still his work uses a formula  of graphite, oil, and canvas to create these breath-like creations. Seinberg's somber pallet, bold strokes, and poetic line work connect the outside world with motion as incessant and loss being inevitable.

Seinberg is continually inspired by the biological senses, environmental factors, and emotional responses to these surroundings. The paintings communicate in a mysterious, unobtrusive manner, speaking subtly and instinctively. Because the various elements within his pictures are determined by what he intuits at each moment of the process of creation, every aspect and phase of his work fades in and out of the paint almost imperceptibly. His ability to poetically and atmospherically convey the powerful, even primordial forces that dictate the rhythms of the  organic universe translate into images that nurture the mind, heart and soul.
